[edit]From Arabic عَانَة (ʕāna), from Classical Syriac ܐܢܐ, ultimately from Akkadian Anat under Assurnasirpal II and (d)Ha-na-atKI in the Old Babylonian Period, sometimes connected to worship of the war goddess Anat, whose name is probably Semitic.
