Etymology

[edit]

From Basque Alzate, a surname. The meaning of Alzate is not clear. It is thought that Alzate is composed of haltz (alder tree) + ate (door, entrance, pass, gorge). Some think that the second part, ate, could be a variation of eta (and, a plurality). So the meaning of the surname seems to be: [the house] at the entrance of the alder tree place, or [the house] in the gorge of the alder trees, or [the house] in the alder tree place.
