Etymology

First attested as altfurse in 1134. Compound of Old Dutch alt (old) and a term related to Old English fyrs (gorse, Ulex europaeus). The second element appears to have been reinterpreted as Middle Dutch vorst (preserve, royal forest) in younger attestations. Compare Lage Vuursche.
