[edit]From Arabic اَلْمَجِسْطِيّ (al-majisṭiyy, “almagest”), with اَل (al-) being the Arabic definite article, from Middle Persian 𐭬𐭢𐭮𐭲𐭩𐭪 (mgstyk /magestīg/), from Ancient Greek μεγίστη (megístē, “greatest”).
