From Arabic اَلْمَجِسْطِيّ (al-majisṭiyy, almagest), with اَل (al-) being the Arabic definite article, from Middle Persian 𐭬𐭢𐭮𐭲𐭩𐭪 (mgstyk /⁠magestīg⁠/), from Ancient Greek μεγίστη (megístē, greatest).
