From Gothic 𐌰𐌻𐌷𐍃 (alhs, holy temple) + 𐌲𐌰𐍂𐌳𐍃 (gards, protector) or Old High German alah + garda, and ultimately from Proto-Germanic *alhs and *gardaz; cognate to Lithuanian Algerdas, Algė, and German Algimund.
