Agreed to be derived from the placename Aduatuca. According to Xavier Delamarre, from Gaulish *aduātucā, from ad- (towards) +‎ uātu (soothsayer) +‎ -cā (feminine of -āco, denoting the provenance or localization), literally place of the soothsayer, where one goes to prophesy
