Etymology

[edit]

Rebracketing of denominal verbs ending in -are, formed from nouns ending in the diminutive suffix -olo. By surface analysis, -olo +‎ -are.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /oˈla.re/
  • Rhymes: -are
  • Hyphenation: -o‧là‧re

Suffix

[edit]

-olàre (verb-forming suffix, first-person singular present -olo, first-person singular past historic -olài, past participle -olàto, auxiliary avére)

  1. -ify; used to derive verbs related to a base noun or verb
branca (claw, talon) + ‎-olare → ‎brancolare (to grope, to feel one's way in the dark)
    chioccia (brooding hen) + ‎-olare → ‎chiocciolare (to cluck) (of a hen)
svagare (to amuse, to distract) + ‎-olare → ‎svagolare (to distract) (Tuscan)

Usage notes

[edit]
  • In stem-stressed forms, the stress is on the antepenultimate vowel (the one preceding the -ol- suffix), e.g. io svàgolo "I distract", lei chiòcciola "she clucks".
