Lithuanian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *-tlo. Compare Latvian -kls, -kla, Old Prussian -clo, Proto-Slavic *-dlo. From *-tlom, -dʰlom (agentive suffix). The Balto-Slavic reconstruction of -tl- is preferable to -dl-, whereby the unusual consonant cluster would have undergone assimilation in Slavic and dissimilation in Baltic. Compare the related Proto-Slavic *-teľь.

Suffix

  1. an old agentive suffix, normally applied to unsuffixed verbs
