-icare
Appearance
Italian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From the Latin verb ending -icāre. By surface analysis, -ic(o) (“-ic”, adjective-forming derivational suffix) + -are (verbal suffix).
Pronunciation
[edit]Suffix
[edit]-icàre (verb-forming suffix, first-person singular present -ico, first-person singular past historic -icài, past participle -icàto, auxiliary avére)
- -ify; used to derive verbs related to a root noun or adjective
- neve (“snow”) + -icare → nevicare (“to snow”)
- decuplo (“tenfold, decuple”) + -icare → decuplicare (“to tenfold, decuple”)
Usage notes
[edit]- In stem-stressed forms, the stress is on the antepenultimate vowel (the one preceding the -ic- suffix), e.g. névica "it is snowing", io decùplico "I multiply by ten".
