[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Early Modern German -ficieren, extracted by rebracketing of borrowed Latin compound verbs with suffixes -ficāre and -ficere (and rarer facere) + suffix -ieren, such as:
- conficieren from Latin cōnficere
- justificieren from Latin iūstificāre
- clarificieren from Latin clārificāre
- inficieren from Latin īnficere
- putrificieren from Latin putrefacere
Compare Italian -ficare, French -ifier and English -fy.
