[edit]From 음 (-eum, verbal noun-deriving suffix) + 애 (-ae, obsolete form of 에 (-e, “at”, locative marker)): "at [VERB]ing...". May have grammaticalized as a purpose-marking suffix in the seventeenth century.[1]
