Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *-ьnikъ, itself originally by nominalization of adjectives in *-ьnъ with the suffix *-ikъ, morphologically equivalent to -ьнъ (-ĭnŭ) +‎ -икъ (-ikŭ).

   ‎двьрь (dvĭrĭ, “двьрь”) + ‎-ьникъ (-ĭnikŭ) → ‎двьрьникъ (dvĭrĭnikŭ, “doorkeeper”)
