Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Slavic *-ьnikъ, itself originally by nominalization of adjectives in *-ьnъ with the suffix *-ikъ, morphologically equivalent to -ьнъ (-ĭnŭ) + -икъ (-ikŭ).

- Suffix appended to nominal stems to create a masculine noun, usually denoting a professional, performer, adherent, place, object, tool or a feature.
- двьрь (dvĭrĭ, “двьрь”) + -ьникъ (-ĭnikŭ) → двьрьникъ (dvĭrĭnikŭ, “doorkeeper”)
- исповѣдь (ispovědĭ, “confession”) + -ьникъ (-ĭnikŭ) → исповѣдьникъ (ispovědĭnikŭ, “supporter”)
- кънига (kŭniga, “book”) + -ьникъ (-ĭnikŭ) → кънижьникъ (kŭnižĭnikŭ, “scribe”)
