Etymology

[edit]

From imperfective lengthening of the perfective Proto-Slavic stem *-čьt- (cf. first singular *čьtǫ of *čisti) + -а́ть (-átʹ); compare честь (čestʹ). Similar lengthening accounts for the change -о--а- in imperfective derivations in -ывать (-yvatʹ) and -ивать (-ivatʹ), e.g.
