[edit]Etymology
[edit]Originally from -ина (-ina) added to adjectives ending in -овый (-ovyj) or -ово́й (-ovój); later extracted out as its own suffix.
Pronunciation
[edit]Suffix
[edit]-ови́на or -о́вина • (-ovína or -óvina)
- suffix appended to nouns, adjectives, etc. to form nouns of various sorts, generally referring to more specific objects than the base lemma
- кле́йкий (kléjkij, “sticky”) + -ови́на (-ovína) → клейкови́на (klejkovína, “gluten”)
- пуп (pup, “navel”) + -ови́на (-ovína) → пупови́на (pupovína, “umbilical cord”)
- шту́ка (štúka, “thing”) + -о́вина (-óvina) → штуко́вина (štukóvina, “thingamajig, widget (colloquial)”)
- крест (krest, “cross”) + -ови́на (-ovína) → крестови́на (krestovína, “crosspiece”) (кресто́вый (krestóvyj) exists but refers not to crosses, but rather to crusades)
- полу- (polu-, “half”) + -ови́на (-ovína) → полови́на (polovína, “half, moiety”)
- котёл (kotjól, “cauldron”) (stem котл- (kotl-)) + -ови́на (-ovína) → котлови́на (kotlovína, “kettle, hollow”) (geology)
Usage notes
[edit]- When added to reducible nouns, the noun assumes its reduced form before the suffix (cf. котлови́на (kotlovína) above).
