Etymology

[edit]

Per Kloekhorst, from Proto-Anatolian *mรณn or similar; cognate with Lycian ๐ŠŽ๐Šš (mแบฝ, โ€œas; so, likewiseโ€), Hittite ๐’ˆ ๐’€€๐’€ญ (ma-a-an /โ mฤnโ /, โ€œlike, as, how; if, wheneverโ€) and Palaic ๐’ˆ ๐’€€๐’€ญ (ma-a-an /โ mฤnโ /, โ€œwhenโ€). The Proto-Anatolian word is of uncertain but probably Proto-Indo-European origin: further compare Old Irish mรก (โ€œwhenโ€), Tocharian A mรคnt (โ€œhow?โ€), Tocharian B mant (โ€œsoโ€, conj.) and perhaps Ancient Greek ฮผฮญฮฝ (mรฉn, โ€œwhile, soโ€).
