Etymology
[edit]An ancient Mesopotamian Wanderwort; connected to Akkadian ๐๐๐ ๐ก (uโ-ri-in-nu /โ urinnuโ /), and potentially Arabic ุบูุฑูู (แธกaran), and potentially further a borrowing from Proto-Semitic; see also ๐๐ท (TIโmuลกen /โ arรป, erรปโ /, โbird of preyโ) and ๐๐๐๐ (a-ra-niลก /โ arฤniลกโ /, โeagle-likeโ). This is one of the terms of the alleged Euphratic substrate theory, which would give it connections to Hittite ๐ฉ๐๐๐ธ (แธซa-a-ra-aลก /โ แธซฤraลก, แธซฤran-โ /), from Proto-Indo-European *hโรฉrล (โeagleโ). Concurring with the opinion of Pennsylvania State University's Dr. Rubio, the borrowing from multiple languages rather than a specific substratum is now the predominant viewpoint in the field.
