Etymology

Kloekhorst proposes a reconstruction Proto-Indo-European *yéw-on-, which he regards as a more archaic form of Proto-Indo-European *yéwos (“barley”). Compare Ancient Greek ζειά (zeiá, “einkorn wheat”) and Sanskrit यव (yáva, “barley”).
