Etymology

Perhaps an ancient Mesopotamian Wanderwort. Some scholars have seen this word as part of the Euphratic substrate hypothesis, which connects it to Proto-Indo-European *h₂éǵros (“field”). Compare also Akkadian 𒀀𒃼 (ugārum) and Ugaritic 𐎜𐎂𐎗 (ủgr).
