From Early Assamese *কঙ্কড়া (koṅkoṛa), from Sanskrit কৰ্কট (karkaṭa). Cognate with Bengali কাঁকড়া (kãkṛa), Odia କଙ୍କଡା (kaṅkaḍā), Hindi केकड़ा (kekṛā).
