[edit]From Maharastri Prakrit 𑀇𑀁𑀕𑀸𑀭 (iṃgāra), 𑀇𑀁𑀕𑀸𑀮 (iṃgāla), from Sanskrit 𑘂𑘒𑘿𑘐𑘰𑘩 (iṅgāla) (compare 𑘀𑘒𑘿𑘐𑘰𑘨 (áṅgāra)). Related to 𑘀𑘽𑘐𑘰𑘨 (aṃgāra), 𑘀𑘽𑘐𑘰𑘨𑘰 (aṃgārā). Compare Old Hindi अंगारा (aṃgārā), Old Punjabi ਅੰਗਾਰੁ (aṁgāru), ਅੰਗਿਆਰੁ (aṁgiāru).
