[edit]Derivation from 𐰶𐰃𐰽 (qïs-, “to squeeze; to suppress, subdue”) + 𐰞 (-ïl) itself inherited from Proto-Turkic *kïs- (“to squeeze”). Cognate with Chuvash хӗс (hĕs), Turkish kısmak (“to reduce, squeeze”), Kazakh қысу (qysu).
