Inherited from Proto-Turkic *kïŕïl (red). Cognate with Chuvash хӗрлӗ (hĕrlĕ), Khalaj qızıl, Azerbaijani qızıl (gold, golden), Turkish kızıl (crimson), Uzbek qizil, Bashkir ҡыҙыл (qıźıl, red), Yakut кыһыл (kıhıl).
