Etymology

For the constituents compare Avestan 𐬯𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬀 (saēna, literally “a raptor, either eagle or falcon”), Sanskrit श्येन (śyená), Old Armenian ցին (cʻin) on the one hand, and Persian مرغ (morğ) on the other.

Akin to Avestan 𐬨𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬖𐬋⸱𐬯𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬋 (mər^əγō.saēnō, “the bird Saēna”), Persian سیمرغ (simorğ), as well as Old Armenian սիրամարգ (siramarg, “peacock”), in dialects with սին- (sin-) and meaning “a mythical bird”, Classical Syriac ܣܝܡܘܪ (sīmūr, “a mythical bird”), Iranian borrowings.
