From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćyaynás, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱy-ey-nó-s ~ *ḱyeh₁-inó-s (bird of prey).[1] Cognate with Sanskrit श्येन (śyená, falcon, hawk).
