From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ā́mātā (son-in-law), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵem- (to marry). Cognate with Sanskrit जामातृ (jā́mātṛ, son-in-law), Persian داماد (dâmâd), Northern Kurdish zava.
