From Proto-Saka *Azalīźa (commander-in-chief), composed of *aza (leader) (cf. Khotanese hinajha (commander of army)) + *līźa (dialect variant of *rīźa (desiring, commanding)) (cf. Khotanese rriś (to desire), Sogdian 𐽀𐼷𐼵𐼸𐽀𐼰𐼸 (ryzkrʾk)).[1]

Cognate with Ancient Greek Αζιλίσης (Azilísēs).
