[edit]From Scythian *Azalīźa (“commander-in-chief”), composed of *aza (“leader”) (cf. Khotanese hinajha (“commander of army”)) + *rīźa (“desiring, commanding”) (cf. Khotanese rriś (“to desire”), Sogdian 𐽀𐼷𐼵𐼸𐽀𐼰𐼸 (ryzkrʾk)).[1]
Cognate with Gandhari 𐨀𐨩𐨁𐨫𐨁𐨮 (ayiliṣa).
