[edit]From Ashokan Prakrit 𐨀𐨁𐨯𐨿𐨟𐨿𐨪𐨁 (istri, Mansehra, Shahbazgarhi) (compare 𑀇𑀣𑀻 (ithī /itthī/, Dhauli, Girnar, Kalsi)), from Sanskrit स्त्री (strī́), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stríH. Cognate with Pali itthi, Maharastri Prakrit 𑀇𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀻 (itthī).
