[edit]From Proto-Iranian *dāráyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰāráyati, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰoréyeti (“to hold”). Cognates include Sanskrit धारयति (dhārayati), Latin firmus and Lithuanian derė́ti.
