Etymology

[edit]

Disputed. Pittau claims a connection to Ancient Greek Ο‡Ξ±Ξ»ΞΊΟŒΟ‚ (khalkΓ³s, β€œcopper, bronze”); Steinbauer (1999a) suggets a derivation from Hittite [Term?] (/ḫalwani-/, β€œa type of drinking vessel”), but both of these have phonetic issues. Gordon claims it literally means "that which is sacrificed", from πŒ‡πŒ€πŒ‹ (hal, β€œto sacrifice”) +‎ -πŒ‰πŒ™ (-iΟ‡, patient suffix).
