Noun

항렬 (hangnyeol)

  1. generation in a descent group (how distantly one is descended from a common ancestor, i.e. a great-grandson of somebody has a "higher" 항렬 (hangnyeol) than a great-great-grandson regardless of their actual age; generally, people of the same 항렬 (hangnyeol) share a character in their name, no matter how distantly related)
    나이 어리지만 항렬 높다
    nai-neun eorijiman hangnyeor-i nopda
S/he is younger in age but of an older generation
항렬 같다면 이름 같은 한자 쓰는 작명 철칙이다.
    Hangnyeor-i gatdamyeon ireum-e gateun hanja-reul sseuneun geos-i jangmyeong-ui cheolchig-ida.
That one use the same hanja in a name if one's generation is the same is the iron rule of naming people.
