[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle Korean ᄃᆡ골 (tòykwòl). The noun suffix 이 (-i) was later attached. Cognate with Korean 대가리 (daegari).
The word is generally considered a compound, but the etymology is not fully clear. The second component is probably Middle Korean 골〯 (kwǒl, “brain”), whereas words such as 데망셍이 (demangseng'i) and 데멩이 (demeng'i) seem to reflect the first component in isolation.
