First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean ᄂᆞᆯ〮개 (Yale: nólkày), from ᄂᆞᆯ— (Yale: nol-, “to fly”) (whence Modern 날— (nal-, to fly)) + (Yale: -kay, inanimate agent suffix). Doublet of 나래 (narae).
