[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested in the Sinseon taeeuljageumdan (神仙太乙紫金丹 / 신선태을자금단), 1497, as Middle Korean 곳블 (Yale: kwospul), although this source lacks tonal marking. Also attested in the Bunmun onyeok ihaebang (分門瘟疫易解方 / 분문온역이해방), 1542, as Middle Korean 곳〮블〮 (Yale: kwóspúl).
Likely from 곻〮 (kwóh, “nose”) + ㅅ (-s-, genitive marker) + 블〮 (púl, “fire”), although rarely perceived as such by modern speakers.
Pronunciation
[edit]- (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ko̞p͈uɭ]
