Inherited from Old Javanese ḍĕḍĕk (rice bran), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *dəkdək (pulverize, crush by pounding) (compare Tagalog darak (bran)) or Proto-Mon-Khmer *lʔək (rice-bran).
