Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀯𑀳𑀺𑀬𑀸 (*vahiyā, “accounts”), from Sanskrit वहिका (vahikā, “diary, ledger”), a variant of वाहिका (vāhikā), which is compounded in राजवाहिका (rājavāhikā, literally “the bearer of (the records of) the king”).
Cognate to Assamese বহী (bohi), Bengali বই (boi), Odia ବହି (bahi), ବଇ (bai), Gujarati વહી (vahī), Hindi बही (bahī), Punjabi ਵਹੀ (vahī), ਬਹੀ (bahī), Sindhi وَهِي / वही, Marathi वही (vahī).
