Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀯𑀳𑀺𑀬𑀸 (*vahiyā, accounts), from Sanskrit ৱহিকা (vahikā, king's diary). Cognate with Sylheti ꠛꠂ (boi, book), Bengali বই (boi, book), Odia ବହି (bahi), Gujarati વહી (vahī), Hindi बही (bahī), Punjabi ਵਹੀ (vahī), ਬਹੀ (bahī), Sindhi وَهِي / वही, Marathi वही (vahī).
