Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old East Slavic ꙗ́стрѧбъ (jástrębŭ), from Proto-Slavic *àstrę̄bъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *ṓˀśuptrembas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ōḱú-pth₂r̥ + *-(V)mbʰ + *-os, from *h₂eḱ-us (“swift, fast”) + *pter- (“wing”). Cognate with Russian я́стреб (jástreb), Old Czech jestřáb.
