Etymology
[edit]From Middle Chinese 龍樹 (MC ljowng dzyuX|dzyuH, literally “dragon + tree”), in turn a translation of Sanskrit नागार्जुन (nāgārjuna).[1][2][3][4] Listed in one monolingual Japanese source as an 音訳 (on'yaku, “transcription”, literally “sound translation”) of the Sanskrit,[5] but considering the Middle Chinese and Sanskrit phonetics, this seems unlikely.
Pronunciation
[edit]Proper noun
[edit]龍樹 • (Ryūju) ←りゆうじゆ (Ryuuzyu)?
- (Buddhism) Nagarjuna, a second century Buddhist philosopher from India
- Synonym: ナーガルジュナ (Nāgarujuna)
