Etymology
[edit]Ultimately from Sanskrit धर्म (dharma, “law; morality; code”), either via Middle Chinese 達磨 (MC dat ma) as a transliteration of the Sanskrit,[1] or as a clipping of 菩提達磨 (Bodaidaruma), in turn from Middle Chinese 菩提達磨 (MC bu dej dat ma) as a transliteration from Sanskrit.[2][3]
