on'yomi

Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Middle Chinese (MC syu|syuH). The kanji uses kan’yōon (yu).

The seemingly unrelated senses "to transport" and "to be inferior" may be due to being a semantic loan from Middle Chinese.
