Etymology
[edit]Name change from 吊頸嶺/吊颈岭 (diu3 geng2 leng5, “Hanging (neck) Ridge”).
Folk etymology derives the name from the rumour that Canadian businessman Alfred Herbert Rennie, who established the Hong Kong Milling Company at Junk Bay, hanged himself there in 1908, when Rennie actually drowned himself. However, the sea that borders the area was historically referred to as 吊頸灣/吊颈湾 (Tiukengwan), a name attested as early as 1893.
