Etymology
[edit]Compound of 蝦蟇 (gama, “toad”) + 口 (kuchi, “mouth”),[1][2] from the way the opened mouth of the coin purse resembles a toad's mouth.[2] The kuchi changes to guchi as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
