[edit]From non-central dialect of Old Japanese which has undergone the vowel change <*əi → e₂> instead of <*əi → i₂>, from Proto-Japonic *ə̀təi-, ultimately from Proto-Japonic *ətu. Compare Proto-Ryukyuan *ote-ᴮ.
