The original character is . Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声): semantic (metal) + phonetic . It originally referred to a metal fitting used to attach a metal ring to a door. Its phonetic component is related to and , and had their meanings ("spreading" or "laying out") borrowed, which later extended to mean "store" or "shop." The modern standard form of the character had its semantic component changed to (meaning "house" or "building") to emphasize its meaning as a "store" or "shop."[1]
