Etymology
[edit]腐 (fǔ, “rotten”) here was influenced by Japanese 腐 (fu, “relating to, or fond of male homosexuality”), as in 腐女子 (fujoshi, “female fan of boys' love (yaoi)”). Thus this literally means “the nation of yaoi (male homosexuality)”.
Such metaphor was based on the Chinese impression of the British, possibly due to the gay culture in Britain and/or the fact that British shows often feature a double male lead, with intimate friendship between the two.
