Compound of 緑 (midori, “green”) + 色 (iro, “color”).[1][2]
First cited to a portion of the 伊勢集 (Iseshū) collection of waka poetry dating to the late 1000s.[1]
For reasons unexplained, various monolingual Japanese resources only include the ryokushoku reading for this compound, yet still gloss the term as みどりいろ (midori iro).[3][4][5]
