Usage notes
[edit]The character 的 is sometimes mistaken as the possessive particle instead of a character for transcription, resulting in rebracketing and thus wrong pronunciation of the place name, e.g. the sentence 利比亞首都的黎波里 (Lìbǐyà shǒudū Dīlíbōlǐ) might possibly be rebracketed as 利比亞 / 利比亚 (Lìbǐyà) + 首都 (shǒudū) + 的 (de) + 黎波里, and Cantonese speakers may read the sentence as 利比亞首都嘅黎波里 (lei6 bei2 aa3 sau2 dou1 ge3 lai4 bo1 lei5), i.e. the sentence is misinterpreted as “‘Ripoli’, the capital of Libya”. Note that 的 should be pronounced as "dī" in this place name instead of "de" as the possessive particle.
Similar phenomenon also occurs in the case of 波羅的海 / 波罗的海 (Bōluódì Hǎi).
