The character 的 is sometimes mistaken as the possessive particle instead of a character for transcription, resulting in rebracketing and thus wrong pronunciation of the place name, e.g. the sentence 利比亞首都的黎波里 (Lìbǐyà shǒudū Dīlíbōlǐ) might possibly be rebracketed as 利比亞 / 利比亚 (Lìbǐyà) + 首都 (shǒudū) + 的 (de) + 黎波里, and Cantonese speakers may read the sentence as 利比亞首都嘅黎波里 (lei⁶ bei² aa³ sau² dou¹ ge³ lai⁴ bo¹ lei⁵), i.e. the sentence is misinterpreted as “‘Ripoli’, the capital of Libya”. Note that 的 should be pronounced as "dī" in this place name instead of "de" as the possessive particle.
