Etymology

From Old Japanese 癈ふ (sipu), attested in the Man'yōshū (c. 759) as 四臂 (sipi₁), hinting at an irregular change from yodan conjugation to kami nidan.[1][2]

    • 974, Kagerō Nikki:
      ()かへしなどするも、かうしひけるはと()ゆ。
      Ta kaheshi nado suru mo, kau shihikeru wa to miyu.
      To do the things like cultivating the rice fields, it would be seen in ways that would have been paralyzing.
