/mot͡ɕiwiru/ → */mot͡ɕijiru//mot͡ɕiju/

Back-formation from 用いる (mochiiru), classical 用ゐる (motiwiru).[1][2]

During the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, sound changes reduced medial /-w-/, merging into /i/.
